WHAT IS THERAPY?

UM student insurance coverage

Therapy is a process of bringing inner conflicts to the surface, and learning new ways of being that meet your needs now. It is an exploration of your inner world that can deepen your self-knowledge, and allow you to face and accept inner conflicts, past trauma, and behaviors you developed in response to those difficulties. You (and all of us) have longstanding patterns of helpful and unhelpful behaviors. By exploring the old patterns that initially made a lot of sense when you were young, but are now causing difficulties, you can learn how to change these unproductive behaviors. The first step is to gain insight, and the next step is to learn practical, down-to-earth new ways of thinking and behaving that will allow you to be happy.

THE THERAPIST RELATIONSHIP

Finding a therapist who feels right for you is important. If you are interested in looking at things differently, it can be helpful to talk to someone outside the situation who doesn’t already know you. This positive relationship and regular meetings may help you feel free to talk about your problems.

THE THERAPY PROCESS

A typical counseling session lasts 55 minutes. Initially, we will explore the difficulties and issues that brought you to therapy, and we’ll explore what you would like to get from therapy. You may begin with a specific problem in mind, or we may both agree on a path that would be helpful for you to explore.

I allow space and flexibility for you to use your time to reach your own solutions. Our relationship will be confidential and based upon mutual respect and trust. I won’t judge or criticize, but will support you as you explore your current situation.
